The application process for the Canada Student Loans program can be intimidating and is often left to the last minute, which results in students receiving their loans very late. “Student Loans 101” is a workshop offered by Financial Aid and Awards to help take away some of the stress. All new SMU students applying for a Nova Scotia Student Loan for the 2019-2020 academic year are invited, along with parents and supporters. The sessions take place in a computer lab on the SMU campus and the students will bring all of the information they need to follow along on the monitor and go through their loan application.

The workshop will be offered twice: Wednesday, May 29th, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm and Wednesday, July 10th, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

Space is limited, so we recommend registering online ASAP! Any questions can be directed tofinancial.aid@smu.ca.

Career Class Presentations

Our Career Class Workshop and Post-secondary 101 presentations are a great way to get your Grade 10 and Grade 11 students thinking about their future. We talk about all of the options after high school and the connection between education and career paths. We also have an optional activity that gets students thinking about their interests and skills, and how those can shape their post-secondary education and future careers.

We are still booking visits for the remainder of the 2018-2019 academic year. Please feel free to pass this information along to any of your teachers who would be interested in having us visit their classes!

Grade 11 Summer Event

Our annual Grade 11 Summer Event is taking place on Friday, July 27th.

Students and their guardians can spend a day and a half at Saint Mary’s, preparing for the transition from high school to university. This includes an overnight stay in Residence, as well as sessions about our programs and services. For more information, contact Emma Wicks,emma.wicks@smu.ca.

University Exploration Visits

University Exploration Visits are still available for the 2018-2019 year.

These visits are a great opportunity for your students to get an inside look at a university campus and learn more about the opportunities a post-secondary education can provide. We provide transportation and lunch, and can cater sessions to meet your students’ academic interests.

For more information, please contact Nina Maric (nina.maric@smu.ca).

Please note: this event is for students living outside the HRM only.
